Hello Arnold,

I first wrote to you in 2001 about a site I work on, www.vinow.com and wanted to let you know so much has changed and improved. It is still produced by residents and Virgin Islanders on St. Thomas, but now covers all four islands and contains a relocation guide, as well as numerous special features; e-cards, photo tour, wall paper, active message board to name a few. I hope you will visit the site again, thank you for your continued support via the link you provide on your site and hope you enjoy the site.

Kind Regards,
Sophia Aubin

[EDITOR'S NOTE: Thanks for the update, Sophia. I have links to your VInow site on my main Web Links page and my U.S. Virgin Islands page.]

Arnold,

Your Ventures site is fantastic. I first ran across it years ago, but at the time I didn't have any Ventures content on my own site, so I haven't written until now.

I run a huge "interactive" record review guide at www.markprindle.com. I write kinda ridiculous reviews, and readers respond with comments of their own (ALL of which are posted). I have added a Ventures page at www.markprindle.com/ventures.htm - on which I review 50 of their album/CD releases. I would love for you to take a look, add any comments you'd like (if you wish) and let me know if we could possibly exchange links. My reviews are a bit irreverent, but I've been a big Ventures fan since I was about 6 years old, so believe me - i love and respect these guys!!!

Thank you in advance for your consideration,
Mark Prindle

[EDITOR'S NOTE: Nice review page, Mark. I've add links to it in both my Ventures Resources Page and my overall Links Page. ]

Greetings,

I just stumbled across your guestbook while looking for additional books on the CV-6. Just wondered if you had ever gotten your book published? My Father is 85 and was on the Enterprise before she was commissioned and also on her "shakedown" cruise as well as being on her during WWII. He is always interested in anything new that someone has to say about his ship.

Please let me (us) know!

Thank You.

[EDITOR'S NOTE: Connie, unfortunately, my book on the Enterprise was never published in hardcopy format. However, I do have the entire thing online at my main site. Click on the link above.]

Subject: Re: Goofy Cartoon Hunt

Thank you very much Arnold,

After further digging Im getting mixed answers. At this link: Big Cartoon Database it say that the cartoon I'm looking for "How to Ride a Horse" is within the feature The Reluctant Dragon. One person told me the the short cartoon within The Reluctant Dragon is Morris the Midget Moose. Now I'm confused. I just want to buy correctly as I am only looking for "How to Ride a Horse" But I will for sure get Saludos Amigos. You see I'm in the horse business and these would be perfect for my presentations. Thanks again and if you have any other thoughts please do let me know.

Dan

[EDITOR'S NOTE: Dan, your reference to "The Reluctant Dragon" struck the right memory. The Goofy short "How to Ride a Horse" IS part of this feature. "The Reluctant Dragon" is available on DVD as part of the Disney Treasures series. "Morris the Midget Moose" is NOT part of "The Reluctant Dragon." I confirmed this info with the book "Walt Disney Animation Encyclopedia."]

Hello,

I am not sure if you are the builder of this site or its owner or both, but I could use some help. I am looking for a Goofy cartoon dealing with him being an equestrian. The topic was how to properly ride a horse. I'm afraid I do not know the name nor the date but it was a cartoon short, nearly 5 minutes. Can you help me please, I would like to buy this cartoon.

Thanks,
Dan Guerrera

[EDITOR'S NOTE: Dan, the only thing I could find fitting your description is the "El Gaucho" segment of the Disney animated classic "Saludos Amigos." In this one, Goofy shows how the Argentinian cowboys (gauchos) ride their horses and lasso ostrich-like birds, and so on. "Saludos Amigos" is available on VHS and DVD on amazon.com. You might also want to check out the special Disney DVD "The Complete Goofy." This is part of the Disney Treasures collection and includes all of the stand-alone Goofy cartoons. But looking through the cartoon titles, I don't see anything about cowboys or riding horses. This DVD is also available from amazon.com. Hope this info helps.]

Hello,

I am Henry Greder GT-40 pilot in 1966 and 1967. I have notice a couple mistake in your Ford GT 40 International Racing Record.

1- My first name is Henry . First initial is H - not D
2- 24 Hours of Le Mans 1967. Ford France GT40 was #1020 not 1017

Take a look at my web site at www.greder-racing.com.

Thanks,

Hello there,

I've been searching and searching for the Ventures track "Hot Buttered Popcorn." Could you pleeeease tell me which album I can find it on?

Thanks

[EDITOR'S NOTE: Are you sure "Hot Buttered Popcorn" was by The Ventures? I did a keyword search on my discography database and didn't get a match. The only thing I found was a song called simply "Popcorn" on a cassette tape of unreleased tracks and alternate takes that was issued by the UK fan club a number of years ago. I suggest trying a search on www.allmusic.com to see if it turns up.]

Subject: USS Enterprise 1776-1777

A little research I have done has turned up a few interesting pointers:

In the Admiralty Court papers of the Maryland State Archives I have found reference to:

Dates: 1777
Description: Capt. James Campbell of the Enterprize vs Fame
Accession No.: 7871-1-7
MSA No.: S 116-7
Location: 1/32/1/6
(http://www.mdarchives.state.md.us/msa/refserv/stagser/ssu100/html/ssu0116.html)

Not to mention at in the same area is reference to:

Dates: 1805
Description: Capt. Richard Johns of the Enterprise, protest against
Commander of French Privateer and Capt. Robert Hughes
Accession No.: 7871-4-38
MSA No.: S 116-185
Location: 1/32/1/50

I have never run across a Captain Richard Johns of the (Lucky Little) Enterprise before. He must have been placed in command sometime close after Stephen Decatur left for his next post after the Tripoli affair.

Also in regards to the debate as to the very first captain of the Enterprise... I submit the attached document and set of references... recalling that subsequent translations have reported that Jacques de la Livaudais was captain on the Corsair (alternatively reported as Captain-Corsair) L'Entreprenant AND reported as in command of L'Entreprise. I submit that these are one and the same.

So, I prefer Jacques de La Livaudais, another direct ancestor from Saint-Malo, Brittany, born 1669, Captain Corsair on the corsair-ship "L'entreprenante" (114 sailors, 14 guns) who assaulted and captured at least three British ships (see above about the bombing of Saint-Malo, July 1695). He married Marie-Guillemette Le Jaloux (her father was a Corsair) and died at sea at the beginning of April 1698 (29 years old, as said). Hi Arnold.

Nice AMC's. My AMX was a two seater as I'm sure you know. White with black stripes. Almost bought one of the Big Bad AMX's, a '71 I think, in blue. Tried it out and found it was too soft, and a little slow even with the '401cid. Too many goodies added I think, and there weren't many to choose from at that time, at least in my area. They had a racing series in your part of the world involving sedans like the Trans-Am cars I believe. Did you get to see any of those? Really admire the work you've put into you web site. Wish I had your expertise to set up a site for my band, but everybody has there strengthens, and that's not one of mine.

All the best, Pete

[EDITOR'S NOTE: Actually, I live in the the U.S. Virgin Islands (about 2,000 miles SE of Miami), so I didn't get to see any of the Trans-Am races, but I used to follow them in the racing magazines. My Dad was the local AMC dealer, and he gave me the '68 Javelin on my 18th birthday. I bought the '72 AMX with money saved up over the years.]

Subject: The Great Carrier War

Not to be picky, but in your Part 6 of the Great Carrier War, among other problems (mostly from over simplifications) with your description of the events, you credit Enterprise and Hornet dive bombers with the demise of Hiryu. Hornet dive bombers scored no, none, zero, zip, nada, hits on any Japanese carrier during the Battle of Midway. Enterprise's VS-6 and part of VB-6 took out Kaga, a single section of VB-6 got Akagi, and Yorktown's VB-3 got Soryu. Hiryu was fatally damaged by a strike launched from Enterprise made up of aircraft from VS-6, VB-6, and VB-3; most of the hits on Hiryu were scored by VB-3. The only carrier that Hornet's dive bombers were able to find was Hiryu after it was attacked as above. Hornet SBD's scored no hits in their attack on Hiryu. Were I you, I'd also double check my figures on the effectiveness of AA fire from Midway Island.

There's lots of misinformation floating around about Midway & the internet just makes it worse. Even the supposed definitive work by Prange "Miracle at Midway" has some 45 major errors in his descriptions of the action from the US side. Suggest you look at "A Glorious Page in our History" by Robert Cressman, et. al. for the best write up.

Also, in your section 7 you have a photo captioned as showing USS Hornet CV-8 ... no, that's USS Yorktown, circa 1937.

Regards,
Rich

[EDITOR'S NOTE: Rich, thanks for the information. I made the correction about the Hornet's involvement in the sinking of the Hiryu. On the effectiveness of the Midway AA fire, I can only go by the original source that I used (which I frankly don't recall right now, since I originally wrote this almost eight years ago). And the photo in part 7 was meant to be a photo of the Yorktown, with reference in the caption to Hornet being a "Yorktown-class" ship. That's the approach I took throughout the section of my site on the history of carriers -- using photos of the appropriate "class ships".

My original sources included a number of publications and articles published by the U.S. Naval Institute as well as Walter Lord's "Incredible Victory." I'm not a naval historian and my web pages weren't intended to be detailed scholarly works, just a brief history for the "lay person." Although there might be some minor historical inaccuracies (there's always been a lot of controversy over exactly what took place and when at Midway), I think my short write-up gives the average person a decent perspective of what took place during the battle. But I do appreciate your comments and do want my pages to be as accurate as possible.]

Arnold,

You don't work for nothing, I have seen your new Japanese EP List. This is a very good work.

On the EP "Kickstand" (EP: Liberty 4070 - 1965), the last track is "Yellowjacket", it"s probalby "Yellow Jacket"; the first track "Kickstand" is "Kick Stand" in the US 45 rpm "Wild Angels/Kick Stand" (45: Dolton 327 - 1966), maybe is not an error but I point that to you.

For the EP "Mod East" (EP: Liberty 4248 - 1967), you have the last title "Wack Wark". I think it must be "Wack Wack" (See US album "Guitar Freakout" (1967)).

On EP "Endless Summer" (EP: Liberty 4270 - 1967), the last track is "Starberry Fields Forever". It must be "Strawberry Fields Forever" (See "Super Psychedelics" (US 1967)) and Beatles album.

On EP "Pedal Pusher" (EP: Liberty 4116 - 1966), they're is only 3 tracks. It's possible : "Caravan" time in the album "Ventures On Stage" (US 1965) is 5' 46" (information from "All Music Guide"). The 3 songs on this EP are on the album "Ventures On Stage). Very big thanks for the Japanese EP list.

For the US album "Underground Fire" (LP: Liberty LST8059 - 1/1969), I found the track 3 named "Sea of Glass". My other sources give the name "Sea of Grass". (Richard Wilson, Buy.com, All Music.com [AMG], Sergey Shulubin's Ventures Page). I join the cover of the double album CD "Flight of Fantasy/Underground Fire" (from "Radical Guitars").

I have some problem with the song "Up, Up and Away". This appear first on album "Batman Theme" (US 1966) and the compositor is "Edwards-Wilson-Bogle-Taylor" (source : Richard Wilson and All Music Guide). I find the same song on album "10th anniversary album" and the compositor is "Jim Webb" (source idem) and Richard Wilson give this title "Up-Up and Away". Have you some precision over it.

Henri

[EDITOR'S NOTE: Henri, thanks for the typo corrections on the Ventures discography. I've made the corrections already. On your last question, the song "Up, Up and Away" on the Batman album is an original composition by the Ventures. The "Up, Up and Away" on the 10th Anniversary album is a different song (made famous by Fifth Dimension) that just happens to have the same title.]

Dear Sir,

I found your site quite intriguing as I have been in search of information regarding HMS Enterprise on which my father served during World War ll.

My mother recently passed away and consequently I inherited several items which related to my father's life also. One of the items was a small plaque, hand engraved with Haile Selassie's own signature, by his own hand. On the plaque is also inscribed 'HMS Enterprise'. My father received this plaque for his part in the rescue of Haile Selassie from Ethiopia as the Italians were invading - at least that is what I am lead to believe. I am at present trying to find as much information as I can on this particular incident but am not have too much success at the moment.

I just thought that this information may be of use to your and your excellent web site.
