Wed Mar 28, 2001 Hi, I like your informative web site. I have a photo of the USS Yukon I found rolled up in a real old cardboard cannister which belonged to a retired Navy Admiral, Mays Lewis who once owned my house. I thought it was just an old ship until recently I noticed that the cardboard container had been addressed to the U.S. Naval Academy Dept of Eng. & Aeronautics, Annapolis. The old coal burning ship looks as though it might have a makeshift flight deck on it. Do you have any info on the USS Yukon pertaining to early Naval Aviation? I can't find anything.
Thanks, [EDITOR'S NOTE: Jim, I found information on the USS Yukon at www.hazegray.org. This site has an online version of the "Dictionary of American Naval Ships." You'll find the Yukon on the page for "auxiliary" ships. It seems that it was basically a cargo ship that was active in the Atlantic convoys during most of WW2. Late in the war it made several trans-Pacific trips also. No mention of it every having been used for aviation purposes.]
Date: Wed Mar 28, 2001 Hello, I am a junior in high school in northern Kentucky. Being rasied by a single mother is hard enough by itself, let-a-lone a vacation every couple of years. When I get out of high school there is something I want to do before my life gets to busy. I would like to try a natural getaway on your tropical island for about a year. A natural getaway is when you stay on an uninhabited island for a period of time with just a knife, pair a clothes, etc. If this could be arranged please contant me at Futball58-hotmail.com . Please send good news. [EDITOR'S NOTE: Brandon, Although there are some uninhabited islands around here, most of them are owned either by private individuals or the government. I really don't know how you would go about getting permission to camp out on one of them. There is a National Park campground on the island of St. John, but that may not be as "back to nature" as you seem to want.]
Date: Wed Mar 28, 2001 Gee I'm supposed to be working here, Arnold but...remembered I had looked over your Star trek collection in a while so I set my Cable Modem to stun and commanded the navigator to "ENGAGE!"...I do have a Star Fleet technical manual on my technical bookshelf reserved only for my important reference manuals...my Mother's family are Pikes and Pykes...many of them have been sea-faring men..I'll bet in a few hundred years one will steer the helm of a star ship..Let's call him Chris for short (LOL!) ..My grandfather sailed into ports like China and worked on ship's engines and mechanics. I enjoyed the Milky Way chart!!! I never was so thrilled to see the positioning of things & beings in our galaxy. My daughters believed Star Trek was real. They were sorely disappointed to find out it was not as they grew up. I have had some time at NORAD and other installations. I checked into the UFO situation at very high levels. Always wanted to know about them. Nothing! I was told I was "owed a favour" and got to meet some U.S. and Canadian officers over 700' underground at NORAD in Canada. All UFO activity they knew of was revealed. Darn! Nothing! Mostly natural and electromagnetic sources and/or new military aircraft test runs. Some of the radar targets looked very realistic and even created visual sightings but nothing other-worldly. We even had a strange object being tracked later in the day. It would travel slowly, make 90 degree turns, accelerate to speeds beyond 1,000 mph and seem to avoid any local aircraft near it. A pilot in the area even saw a strange light in the area. it was due to ice reflections and hail from a nearby storm creating "angels" on the screens. When the pilot got closer he was into the hail storm and turned away. Stephen [EDITOR'S NOTE: Stephen, thanks for the interesting stories. Hey, you just might be related to Captain Christopher Pike! :-) I'm not a big UFO believer. Although I do believe there's a high probability of other intelligent life in the universe, I'm skeptical that any have been visiting us. I'll believe when a saucer sets down right next to me and ET comes out. Wouldn't it be wild if ETs tens of light years away have picked up broadcasts of the Ventures' '60s music by now?]

It's worth a look. But please note that I haven't ordered anything from this site and can't vouch for the quality of service.]
Date: Thu Mar 22, 2001 Hello there! I enjoyed your website. I certainly takes me back....I was on a cruise that passed through St. Thomas last month. I thought that it was absolutely beautiful. In fact, my friends and I were actually considering relocating down to the island. Because it is such a big decision to make a move like this, I am trying to do some research, to help in the decision making process. Unfortunately, it has been really hard for me to find information relating to renting an apartment, as well as job info. Is there any way that you could let me know what the job market is like down there? Also, is it possible to find an affordable apartment near or in view of the beach? I'm assuming that these might sound like ridiculous questions, but they have been on my mind. If you can send me an answer, that would be great. Thanks for your help, and your time. Lisa [EDITOR'S NOTE: Lisa, I'll try to get some contact information for you and get back in touch later. I'm glad you like St. Thomas and my virtual tour.]
Date: Thu Mar 22, 2001 Great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I really love it. Question do you know anything about a company called Autoform that was located in Elkhardt Ind. This co. did dealer options for Chevrolet from 84-86. The reason I ask is I own one of their conversion Camaros, an 84 2-seater convertible. Everyone thinks I am making this up. If you or your readers have any info. please contact me. Again great site! Thank you so much for your time. [EDITOR'S NOTE: I'm afraid I don't have any information on the Autoform company. If anyone reading this does, how about contacting "Shadow" at the email address above.]
Date: Wed Mar 21, 2001 I just visited your site, while researching information about the old TV show, Riverboat. I noticed an old reference to it from someone who was interested in all of the ships (both real and fictional) that bore the name Enterprise. The TV show Riverboat was aired from 1959 to 1961. It starred Darren McGavin as Captain Grey Holden, and in it's first season it also starred a young Burt Reynolds. The name of that boat was the Enterprise. EPearce [EDITOR'S NOTE: Thanks for the information on the Enterprise that appeared in the TV show Riverboat. I really appreciate getting the info.]
Date: Sun Mar 18, 2001 Hello, I greatly enjoyed the information on the Enterprise, the first steamboat to complete a round trip voyage between Pittsburgh and New Orleans. I'm particularly interested because I have reason to believe that my ancestors were instrumental in her construction and historic voyage. I'd appreciate any additional information on the Enterprise and the Dispatch which was the next steamboat they built. Thank you. Robert [EDITOR'S NOTE: Robert, I'm glad you liked my Enterprise history. I don't have specific information on the steamboat that completed the first trip between Pittsburgh and New Orleans. But I've listed below the books that I used as sources for "steamboat" chapter of my book. I found all of these at my local public library. I hope you can find some of them in your library and that they'll have the type of info you're looking for.
Date: Tue Mar 13, 2001 Hello.. I am a 21 year old kid from Louisiana. when I was about 15 I started getting into surf music and these were the first songs I learned to play on guitar. I didnt take me too long to find the Ventures of course. Well, tonite I was searching for some Ventures mp3s (finding an album around here is near impossible). I have a question for you. I own the Ventures' first album. I bought it at a antique shop. It is playable and sounds alright. Just a hint of scratchy sounds. But no real scratches. The cover is not that pretty though. It is the cover that did not have the Ventures on the front, but instead some guys that filled in for em. How much would this album be worth? I have no intention on selling it. Also I would like to thank you for your page. Having all that information my Ventures collection will probably grow rapidly (in mp3s that is). Your page is amazing. Jake. [EDITOR'S NOTE: Jake, I'm glad you like my Ventures web site. On the value of the Walk Don't Run album, I paid $10 for a copy of that album about a year ago. But as they get more and more rare, you might be able to get more for it on an auction site like ebay.]
Date: Thu Mar 1, 2001 You have an outstanding site! I was on the Big "E" from Nov 97 to Aug 00. And I was on board when we made that port visit to St.Thomas. I worked on the Hangar Deck as an ABH. I was a blue shirt and ran the aircraft elevators. Blue shirts don't give the aircraft a final look over so it's good to go, they just "chock and chain" them. Again an outstanding job. [EDITOR'S NOTE: Thanks for the comments on my USS Enterprise tour. I hope you enjoyed your visit to St. Thomas as much as I enjoyed my tour of the "Big E."]
Date: Wed Feb 28, 2001 Sir, I was stationed as an air controlman at NAS Agana from 1956 thru 1958. It was a great tour of duty and fun. Taking your tour was a trip back in time. Thank you so much...I didn't realize my old duty station was no longer...Back then there was always a battle between the air force and the navy about closing NAS Agana and the Navy always won...until now... Leon [EDITOR'S NOTE: I'm glad you enjoyed the Guam tour. The Navy's building back up on Guam again and seems to have been tapped to be the base for some subs and possibly a carrier. But I don't think that NAS Agana will be restored anytime soon. The base runways actually now make up a big part of the civilian Guam International Airport.]
Date: Wed Feb 28, 2001 Sir, My youngest son coppied your discrography and the page about you and your love for the ventures and Surf music. I just got on the computer this year and you are still there. Awesome. I got back into Surfing after a fifteen year break in the Army and I am back and Instrumental surf music is about all I listen too. I am trying to find copies of Rare Surf, vol 1-3, no longer in print. Is there any access to this music where you are? I am Gerald Stephenson and I still have my original Ventures vinals up till the Jim Croche songbook aand Rockey Road, Now I am getting the One Way records 2 for one releases. Awesome again. Thanks for your time and keeping the Ventures accessable to us older fans. [EDITOR'S NOTE: I'm glad you've gotten some good use out of the Ventures pages. I'm sorry, but I don't know where you can get the Rare Surf collection. Sometimes amazon.com can find out of print stuff. It might be worth giving them a try.]
Date: Sun Feb 25, 2001 I'm trying to find the movie Hot Rod Hullabaloo. My husband bought a 1932 Ford Roadster years ago from a person who had 3 cars of his in this movie, one of which was the 32 Ford Roadster. We have articles and the poster but I would really love to find the movie. If you can help it would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely, [EDITOR'S NOTE: I'm sorry, but I don't know where you can find the movie Hot Rod Hullabaloo, other than trying the usual places like amazon.com. In fact, I had never heard of this movie before.]
Date: Tue Feb 13, 2001 The map of Palau at us-micro.htm is missing its Southwest Corner, which is occupied by Hatohobei State, centered on Tobi Island. [EDITOR'S NOTE: Thanks for the note, Peter. I'll try to get the map fixed sometime soon.]
Date Wed Feb 7,2001 Please tell me more about which Pirates the Lucky Little Enterprise faced in the Carribean. I am doing research on the validity of the pirate Jose Gaspar and any information you could give me would be much appriciated.
Thank you, [EDITOR'S NOTE: I'm afraid that I don't have any information on specifically which Caribbean pirates were involved in the captures by the Lucky Little Enterprise. Sorry!]
Date: Feb 7, 2001 Sir, I am the Weapons Officer (aka "GunBoss") on CVN-65. I have been aboard for three years and am the only senior officer remaining who was present for our last visit to St. Thomas. I didn't know of you then or I would have made a point to give you a personal tour. I have a keen interest in naval history and particularly USS Enterprise history. In addition to my regular duties, I am involved in a project to build a small museum onboard (called the "Enterprise Room") to highlight and preserve her legacy. I am researching the history of all eight Enterprises and I've only just discovered your excellent site. You've obviously done some very thorough homework. I do have one question... you have mentioned that the first Enterprise was named "HMS George" before she was captured by Col. B. Arnold's forces. What is your source for this bit of info? Nothing I've ever found has mentioned this name. In fact, we have been given an artifact (sterling bowl) an heirloom from an old English family that is reputed to have come from HMS Enterprise (the very same boat captured from the British?). However, other than a letter from the family there is no provenance. Additionally, I have found that there have been at least 15 "Enterprises" in the British navy. So I had assumed that all the American's did was raise a new flag over their captured sloop and drop HMS from the name. Grateful if you could enlighten me on this point. Additionally, with regard to your book "These are the voyages", I'm very interested in adding to my personal library, your offer of: "an expanded version that includes full-screen JPEGs of the thumbnail GIFs in this special edition, plus: additional photos, color ship drawings and maps, a ship comparison chart, and a ship timeline chart." We will be sailing south next month, and if we should happen to be in your neighborhood, I'll let you know. If there is anything I can do for you from here please don't hesitate to ask. My email address on board is: giler-enterprise.navy.mil
Cheers, [EDITOR'S NOTE: Rick, thanks for your comments about my Enterprise history. You may not know, but when the ship was at St. Thomas, I presented 5 copies of my manuscript to the public affairs officer (at the Captain's request) for the ship library. You might be able to still find these copies on board. As for the "expanded version," I'm afraid that chores at home and work haven't allowed me the time to devote to that project. However, I'll keep your name and email address on record when I'm able to work on it in the future. On the question of the original name of the sloop Enterprise, my source was the book:
by John Fitzhugh Millar Thirteen Colonies Press 710 South Henry Street Williamsburg, Virginia 23185 Published: 1986 On page 108, which is on the George/Enterprise, Mr. Millar writes that "The British had long understood the strategic importance of Lake Champlain.... Therefore, they began a program of building some small warships to protect their interests on the lake.... Already built and ready for launch was the schooner Royal Savage, and already launched was the sloop George, capable of mounting ten guns. Arnold renamed her Enterprise and took her into his growing naval force on the lake." Also, on page 126, which is on the Lee, Mr. Millar writes that "When Benedict Arnold captured St. John's at the northern end of Lake Champlain in May 1775, he took possession of two vessels that had recently been built by the British: the sloop George (which he renamed Enterprise) and the schooner Royal Savage." I hope this information is of use to you in putting together the on-ship museum. I hope the Enterprise visits St. Thomas again in the near future. I'd love another opportunity to tour her.]
Date: Sun Feb 4, 2001 Just wanted to let you know I've read the last petition to The Hall plus the countless letters backing THE CAUSE. Anyway, I don't play the axe but I'm a big fan (50 now) from way back. Yes I get all the overseas bulletins & you'll probably recognize the name but I thought of a different approach we might take. The 40TH ANNIVERSARY GOLDMINE ARTICLE might be a start. Say sent directly. It certainly sums up the entire picture, has plenty of quotes from their own peers & even offers Don & Bob's views on being overlooked regarding their induction. Then why not follow that up with the 30TH ANNIVERSARY TRIBUTE TAPE. Nothing drives the 'adoration point' home more than that. If you've caught the PANDO MAGAZINE INTERVIEW with Don on the official webstite, as a fan you get even more de-moralized 'cause they're talkin' 'bout giving it up once the Japanese Tour Contract is up in two years. And yes Don mentions how disgusted he & Bob are about being shuned entrance into you-know-what. Just my 2 cents worth on the subject but I applaud your efforts year after year. A TRUE FAN YOU ARE!
Sincerely, [EDITOR'S NOTE: Tom, thanks for your suggestion about the articles and the 30th Anniversary tribute tape. I have several articles including the one from Goldmine and will take you advice and send copies with the next Hall of Fame petition. Something else I was planning to do to show the influence that the Ventures had (and still have) on would-be guitar players is to send copies of the "Underground Fire Plays The Ventures" tribute CDs. Thanks for your support to the cause.]
Date: Sun Feb 4, 2001 I just found this web site and immediately added it to my favorites. You have done a great job and the graphics are superb. Keep up the good work. Carl [EDITOR'S NOTE: Thanks for the comments, Carl. I'm glad you like the The Fabulous Ventures site and will be a regular visitor. I try to keep the discography updated and add new pictures when available.]
Date: Sun Feb 4, 2001 Hi Arnold, I think your tour of St. Croix is fantantic. However I wanted to know about the hospitals in the island. Are there any around Christiansted? And if so can you please provide me with their contact numbers or websites?
Thanks a lot. [EDITOR'S NOTE: Thanks for the comment on the St. Croix tour. There's one government-owned hospital on St. Croix, and it's about half-way between the towns of Christiansted and Frederiksted. The contact info is:
(340) 778-6311 I don't think they have a web site.]
Date: Sun Jan 21, 2001 Do you have a rumors section? If not, I suggest starting some kind of bulletin board for the next Star Trek movie. Here's the first: Since this next movie will have to do with the Romulans and a character as exciting as Khan my guess is Denise Crosby will be back as Yar's Romulan daughter. She's the only adversary that Picard would have any challenge with and one of the few I've wanted to see in the movies (and in my opinion the Durass Sisters weren't anywhere near threatening). What do you think? Of course these are just rumors :) Robin [EDITOR'S NOTE: Robin, I don't have a rumors section, but I welcome comments from fans. You might have something there about Denise Crosby being in Star Trek X. I'll post any news I hear about the movie as time passes.]
Date: Fri Jan 19, 2001 I was wondering why you took off some of your reviews. If you have all of the reviews of Star Trek DS9 and Voyager. I would like to have the reviews sent to me if that is possible. Thank you for your time.
A fan of your reviews, [EDITOR'S NOTE: I'm glad that you like my DS9 and Voyager reviews. But I haven't taken any reviews off the web site. I only started doing the reviews in April 1995, so I don't have any reviews for episode that aired before then.]
Date: Wed Jan 17, 2001 I am really interested in a documentary about Elvis. The name of the documentary is "This Is Elvis" (1981). Is there anyway that you can supply the information that I need to go about ordering this film somehow? [EDITOR'S NOTE: I don't really have any more info on "This Is Elvis", but I suggest trying www.amazon.com. I thinks that many (most) of the Elvis films are available on video, so they might have it.]
Date: Sun Jan 14, 2001 Where can i find the guitar tab for Paint It Black [EDITOR'S NOTE: Sorry, but I don't have a source for the tab of that song. Maybe a reader can help you.]
Date: Tue Jan 9, 2001 Hi Arnold, I am doing a few sites for B&B's on St Croix and would like to add a link to your page as it's the best tour page of St Croix.
Thanks, [EDITOR'S NOTE: Thanks for the compliment on the St. Croix Tour. Certainly a link to my page would be okay.]
Date: Fri Jan 5,2001 Mr. van Beverhoudt: I am a researcher/writer working with Creative Productions, an exhibit design and fabrication company based in Pensacola, Florida. We are creating a shipboard exhibit for the USS Enterprise (CVN-65). In connection with that exhibit, I am looking for information about the various Enterprises. I reviewed your web site featuring a tour of 'The Big E' with great interest, and have also read your online book, These are the Voyages. Along those lines, I wonder if you know of any other available books, documents, or other resources that might provide information to help exhibit visitors gain insights into the distinctive history and legends of the various Enterprises. The turnaround time on this project is extremely tight, with storyboard copy due by early February and the entire exhibit to be completely installed by April of this year. Plans have already been approved and the project is coming together well. If your schedule allows, I would certainly welcome your input on the history of the USS Enterprise. Please feel free to contact me by e-mail at this address, at your convenience. Thank you.
Sincerely, [EDITOR'S NOTE: Debbie, you'll find a very extensive bibliography of publications with information about the various ships named Enterprise as part of my Enterprise history web site. Go to www.sandcastlevi.com/sea/enterprise/voyappb.htm.]
Date: Wed Jan 3, 2001 Dear Arnold, First of all Happy New Year to you from Bonnie Scotland. I have been trawling through the Disney web site trying to find some info on a 1940's military cartoon for my father. The search engine has eventually thrown up your site which we have looked at with interest. Hopefully you can help us. The title of the cartoon was Victory Through Air Power, it was about 2 hrs long and was probably made by Walt Major Films. It was recently shown on UK television but we have been unable to trace it here. Would appreciate any info you can pass onto us.
Best Regards, [EDITOR'S NOTE: Duncan, the Disney cartoon you're referring to (Victory Through Air Power) was released in July 1943 and it ran about 63 minutes. It was based on a book published in 1942 by Alexander de Seversky. It was a combination documentary and propaganda piece talking about the benefits of strategic bombing at the height of World War II. The first part of the movie was about the history of aviation and showed animated versions of the Wright Brothers and other aviation pioneers. The second part featured a French and a German pilot who go through a history of aerial combat. The final part is about the war in the Pacific and features animated scenes of mortal combat between an American eagle and a Japanese octopus. I've never seen this Disney movie and I've never heard of it being released on video. The information above is from the book:
by John Grant (2nd Edition, 1993) Hyperion Books 114 Fifth Avenue New York, NY 10011]
Date: Wed Jan 3, 2001 I had a video done for the Blue Angels 40th anniversary. It was footage of the Blues choreographed to Van Halens song "Dreams". My copy was erased, do you have any idea where I might get another copy of this video?
Sincerely, [EDITOR'S NOTE: Romeo, I don't remember ever seeing the video you're referring to. Sorry.]
Date: Sun Dec 31, 2000 Hi, I'm looking for an old favorite, "Joy" by The Ventures on CD. I had an LP record as a youngster which I loved but is totally destroyed now. I'm in India. If you can tell me where a CD is available I'll be mighty grateful. Note that I want the original album on CD. NOT A REMIX.
Thanx [EDITOR'S NOTE: "Joy" was reissued on CD by One Way Records (US) and See for Miles Records (UK). Both versions should be available through many online music stores. I'm sure you should be able to find it at www.cdnow.com or www.amazon.com.]
Date: Sat Dec 23, 2000 I am looking for the original sound track of the TV serial FLASH GORDON can you help. I would love to give this record or tape to a friend who has been of great help to me. Thank you for trying to help. Thank you again. [EDITOR'S NOTE: I haven't seen that soundtrack album in years, and I don't have it either. Have you tried www.amazon.com? Or maybe you can find a used copy through one of those auction sites, like www.ebay.com.}
Date: Sat Dec 23, 2000 Hi Arnold, What a great web site and what a great place to live ...What more do you want from life!...This e-mail comes to you from cold bleak Devon in England...Have a look at my new and rather primitive web page "Gyan's Pipeline Page" I will insert a link to your site soon. If you are good at that sort of thing do send me a banner(HTML) of your site that I can insert in my site...My site is totally non -commercial...
Best Wishes. [EDITOR'S NOTE: Gyan, I checked your Pipline Page and congratulate you on starting another fine instrumental rock web page.]
Date: Sun Dec 17, 2000 Dear Sir: I thoroughly enjoyed your history of the Enterprise. I was aboard the Big "E" as a member of the Flight Deck Crew (V-1) from 1965-1968.
Sincerely, [EDITOR'S NOTE: Craig, I'm glad you liked my history of the Enterprise and that it brought back some worthwhile memories. She's still the best carrier in the Navy, in my book.]
Date: Sun Dec 17, 2000 What are your guidelines for using graphics from your web site?
Thanks, [EDITOR'S NOTE: Mary Beth, that depends on which graphics and for what purpose. Some of the photos were taken by me and I can extend permission for their use, but other graphics are from other sources and I don't have the right to grant permission for those.]
Date: Sun Dec 17, 2000 Dear Sir Your page has Chris Columbus discovering Puerto Rico on November 19, 1943. Possible but not likely. Very lovely site and well put together. Gerry Dietz [EDITOR'S NOTE: Oops! I've made the correction on my Puerto Rico page. Thanks for letting me know.]
Date: Sun Dec 17, 2000 A couple of comments on your lists... The Ventures' Christmas Album as released in Japan (LP) has the same songs as the US release. The Ventures Pops in Japan CD has the tracks from the LP with 8 bonus tracks. Kirisame no Hodo is actually called Rainy Pavement, and Yokohama Lights is a separate track. Your list is also missing Reflections in a Palace Lake. If track order is important, let me know. [EDITOR'S NOTE: Thanks for the corrections to my Ventures Japanese Discography. I've made the necessary changes.]
Date: Fri Dec 8, 2000 Hello, I am from Germany and not good speaking English. I am looking for pictures from all ships named USS Enterprise. Can you help me?
Greetings [EDITOR'S NOTE: Mathias, the pictures on my Enterprise History web pages are the only ones I have of the historical ships. You can also try the U.S. Naval Institute, which has a very extensive photographic collection.]
Date: Fri Dec 1, 2000 I am going to Hawaii in February and your tour sounds wonderful. Is this a planned tour or do we have to find these places on our own. If it is planned where do we get it and what is the cost. By the look of the map it seems to cover everything.
Yours Truly, [EDITOR'S NOTE: Shirley, my online tour of Oahu is based on several different actual tours, as follows: - Waikiki Trolley is a old-style trolley bus system that runs through the downtown Honolulu district from 8:30 am until 11:15 pm every day. For $18.00 you get an unlimited pass that lets you get on and off at any of the about 30 stops. There are two routes, one "shopping district" route and the other a "sightseeing" route. In addition to many of the more prominent hotels, the Waikiki Trolley stops at the Honolulu Zoo, Waikiki Aquarium, Ala Moana Shopping Center, Hawaii Maritime Center, Aloha Tower Marketplace, Bishop Museum, State Capitol and Iolani Palace, Honolulu Art Museum and many others. This is the best way to see the sights in downtown Honolulu. - Polynesian Adventure, Circle Island Tour is a traditional sightseeing tour similar to what you would get stateside on Gray Line Tours. The Circle Island Tour is an all-day affair that begins around 8:30 am and last until 5:00 pm. All of my beach, inland, pineapple plantation pictures were taken on this tour. It also includes a stop at the Waimea Falls Park. This tour runs about $55 per adult. - Polynesian Adventure, Arizona Memorial Tour is a quick city tour that includes a long stop at Pearl Harbor and the Arizona Memorial. It starts around 9:00 am and lasts until 12:30 pm. The cost is about $15 per adult. - Polynesian Adventure, Polynesian Cultural Center Tour is a very enjoyable afternoon-into-evening stop at the Center, which gives a little taste of 5 or 6 Polynesian island cultures. You have the option of a park-only tour for about $62 per adult, a park and luau tour for about $75, or a park and VIP dinner tour for about $120. The VIP tour includes reserved seating and a video of the Center. All three options include admission to a wonderful evening stage show called "Horizons." I hope this information is helpful.]
Date: Fri Nov 17, 2000 Dear Mr. Beverhoudt. I have been reading your "Hollywood Goes Racing" and I really liked it. I am writing a paper on auto racing in movies and I have found that there has been amazingly little written on the subject. Which I think is really odd when one considers how popular racing is as a sport and that there are some really great racing movies. Of the writing I have found on this subject, I really liked yours best. I don't have much to add to your list, except a title I found on imdb.com when I was looking for racing films. A movie called Speed King (Wilfred Lucas, 1913) with Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle. There are also Earl Cooper, Barney Oldfield and Ted Tetzlaff who were race drivers from what I gather from imdb. It's a black and white, silent, Keystone film which is only 8 minutes long. Plot Outline: Action scenes of early automobile racing highlight this story of Papa's efforts to thwart Mabel's romantic infatuation with a race car driver. I haven't seen this film so I don't know how much racing action there is in film, but it could possibly be the oldest movie about race drivers, so it could be interesting from historical point of view. Anyway I just wanted to tell you how much I like your writing.
Yours [EDITOR'S NOTE: Hakon, thanks for the nice comments about my "Hollywood Goes Racing" page. Also, thanks for the information on the 1913 film Speed King. I'll try to find out more about it, but I think you're right that it might be one of the first racing movies made.]
Date: Sun Nov 5, 2000 Sir: I have been looking for years for any of the tutorial LP's that The Ventures had out in the market when I was young. I learned to play my first Ventures tune from these. Unfortunately all of my tutorial albums and Ventures music were stolen. I have searched everywhere but obviously not in the right places to replace the treasures. Perhaps you could help me and maybe not but if you know anyone or anywhere that I could try I would appreciate you assistance very much. Dan [EDITOR'S NOTE: The five "Play Guitar with the Ventures" albums were reissued on CD a couple years ago by a U.S. label "One Way Records" as a 3-CD set. The first four albums were also issued by a U.K. label "See for Miles Records" on two separate CDs. Both sets are out of print now, but you might still be able to find them on some of the on-line music stores. I suggest also checking around on eBay or the other online auction sites to see if anyone is trying to sell theirs. Note that neither CD set came with the instructional booklets!]
Date: Sat Oct 28, 2000 Hi Arnold, I was wondering if you might know the difference between a song the Venture's did, by the name of "Let's Go?" It appears there are two songs with the same name and one of them is a great rocker tune. On the Ventures "Favorite" cd, song eight is "Let's Go", and it is a fantastic song, but it is totally different from the song "Let's Go" from the album "Let's Go." Do you remember this situation at all? The reason I'm asking is I can find tabs for the "Let's Go" from the Album "Let's Go" but I would really like find tabs for the "other" one if at all possible. Would you have any suggestions?
Thanks, [EDITOR'S NOTE: John, unfortunately I don't have the "Favorites" CD and never heard that different song called "Let's Go", so I won't be able to help out.]
Date: Sat Oct 28, 2000 Hi Arnold, I found and ordered an old Nokie CD that also featured Semie Moseley. I was wondering if you happened to know what the tracks might be on this cd?
KICP702 EDWARDS, NOKIE 91 It was apparently made in '91 by King LTD. If you don't happen to have a track listing, and would like a copy of the listing when I receive the cd, let me know, be glad to send it to you.
Thanks, [EDITOR'S NOTE: Hi again, John. Actually, I bought that Nokie '91 CD earlier this year as a reissue from King records (with the same number KICP702). It's a good listen. Because the liner notes are in Japanese, I can't confirm whether Semie Moseley was involved in the concert, but I know that Nokie used his special edition blue Mosrite guitar.]
Date: Sat Oct 28, 2000 Hi! from Italy. I'm an old fan of the group, which was, with "The Shadows", one of my favourite in the early 60's. I had the good chance to meet Nokie Edwards and his adorable wife at the CAAS convention in Nashville in July, and I can tell you how friendly and nice they were with me. I run a guitar festival in Soave (Verona) - Italy, the town worldwide well known for the famous white wine. Next edition will be on 21st and 22nd April 2001, and will be called "Soave 2001". I invited Nokie and Judy to be my guests, and I sincerely hope they will come, and many of you will too. Thank you for supporting The Ventures music!
Ciao, [EDITOR'S NOTE: Thanks for your email about Nokie Edward, Pierpaolo. The Ventures have been my favorite band since 1963. I only heard The Shadows for the first time about 2 years ago and have bought some of their CDs since then. Good luck on your guitar festival.]
Date: Sun Oct 22, 2000 Cool site! I live about 3 miles from the former Penske Racing shop (Newtown Square, PA). I have many fond memories of this effort and am happy to see someone who shares my interest.
Regards, [EDITOR'S NOTE: Glad you liked the Javelin racing pages, Eric. Those were certainly some great days for U.S. road racing.]
Date: Sun Oct 22, 2000 Greetings from Eureka CA - I just read your 1999 petition to induct the VENTURES into the R&R Hall of Fame while downloading a bunch of their stuff via Napster - I owned a slew of their records in my long-lost youth (I was born in 1951) but long since traded, sold or threw them away along with a lot of other old stuff I wish I had kept, like Herb Alpert & the Tiajuana Brass (another instrumental group...) & a lot of old James Bond soundtracks that I suspect would be worth $ for the covers if not the LPs themselves...anyway it's nice to see someone doing something because they want to do it (i.e., get the VENTURES the recognition they deserve) and I'd be glad to "sign" a petition, send more e-mail or even snail-mail if it would help. ALOHA - Freundliche Grube - CIAO - Venlig Hilsen - SALUT - Salutations - SHALOM - Med hilsener - SALUDOS EDITOR'S NOTE: Thanks for the comments, Roy. You can electronically "sign" our petition at www.sandcastlevi.com/ventures/fhall.htm]
Date: Sat Oct 14, 2000 Enjoyed your site on Hollywoods Racing Films, but in the movie "The Big Wheel" starring Mickey Rooney, you list Spring Byington as Billy McCoy's racing team mate...Ms Byington was about 60 years old when that film was made and very matronly...she later went on to star in a TV series December bride...other than that little error, it was great...(think you'll find that Steve Brody was Billy McCoy's team mate).
Best Regards, [EDITOR'S NOTE: Thanks for the correction, Doug. Ms. Byington was Billy McCoy's "mother" -- not "team mate" in that movie.]
Date: Wed Oct 11, 2000 Hi Arnold, I want to thank you for this great listing on your site. I bought a CD from Tom, and it was Nokie Vs Takeshi. Unfortunately it is almost entirely written in Japanese, so I couldn't read the track listings. Thanks to your listings, I discovered it is recognized under a different name: "Oldies in Electric Guitar Heaven" Thanks to you, I now have not only a track listing, but I discovered there was a third guitar player, not listed anywhere else: Munetaka Inoue! The title is very misleading I feel, as Nokie only plays on three out of sixteen songs. He should have been listed as a guest playing "bonus tracks." Both of the other players play more than Nokie, with the majority being played by Takeshi. Thank you, I learned so much and as always your great site helps someone again. John [EDITOR'S NOTE: I'm glad you found the discography useful, John. I must admit, though, that I had to get help from a Japanese fan to translate the titles on that Nokie Edwards CD.]
Date: Mon Oct 9, 2000 Hello Arnold, Thanks for all the information in your website about the Ventures. I play guitar since the early 60's and The Ventures has always been my favourite guitar-band. Mij brother Hans and I formed a band and we played a lot of Ventures music. Our drummer Max Aust visited a concert of the Ventures in America and bought a lot of albums of the Ventures in America. In Holland we hear nowadays nothing from the Ventures, but I know a lot of fans of the Ventures and we keep enjoying their music. I'm also a Ferrari fan. I am an employee of Fiat Auto in the Netherlands and with my company I visited the Ferrari factory in Marranello. It was a pleasure for me. This day was the Formula I race of Japan. What a joy that Michael Schuhmacher won the race and becomes the Formula I champion of the new season. Met vriendelijke groeten / With kind regards / Cordiali saluti, [EDITOR'S NOTE: Im glad you liked by Ventures and Ferrari Racing sections. By the way, you can find many Ventures CDs at www.cdnow.com.]
Date: Sun Oct 8, 2000 I appreciate the time you have apparently spent on researching the Enterprises both in fact and fiction. Thanks. P.S. I saw a photo of the 1993 Yacht Enterprise on the web... apparently the owners are trying to sell it. Just thought you'd like to know. [EDITOR'S NOTE: Thanks for the comments on the Enterprise History and for the information on the 1993 yacht. I'll try to find out more.]
Date: Mon Oct 2, 2000 High praise goes out to y ou and your wonderful web site! I have always been a HUGE Star Trek: The Next Generation fan. I also enjoy Voyager and sometimes DS9. The one and only thing I would change would be that I would place novel numbers in the book descriptions. I used this novels section to help me when I go to the bookstore to buy ST books. I then would look for novem number. Beyond that, I would recommend this site to ALL my friends. Paula from VA [EDITOR'S NOTE: Thanks for the compliment on my Star Trek Episode Guides and for the suggestion for the book guide. I'll try to add the novel numbers in a future update.]
Date: Sun Oct 1, 2000 Stardate 1818.2 I've just visited your site and found it fantastic. I would like to receive further information about the electronic version you've mentioned there. I could never think that the Enterprise's history could go so distant. I'm publishing in a Brazilian Star Trek Forum the History of the Enterprises, and in my searches for the OV-101, I found your site and saw that my work is quite incomplete...but now I will certainly update it! I would like to know if there's a download link for the entire suff, and if you give me your permission to translate it to Portuguese (with my limitations) and publish it here, with all sources and copyrights respected. Thanks and congratulations, your job is wonderful.
Greetings from Brazil, [EDITOR'S NOTE: Jeff, because of time limitations, I haven't had the chance to put together the expanded version of my Enterprise History book yet. But I'll keep your name and email address on file for when I get to work on it. As for translating my online history to Portuguese for the Star Trek Forum in Brazil, I don't have a problem with that as long as its for distribution only to the Brazilian Star Trek Forum members and you include complete copyright information and a link to my web site.]
Date: Sun Oct 1, 2000 Hi, I'm also a long time Ventures fan... I have about a dozen or more Ventures reel tapes and will scan the covers, backs, spine, and reel if you like... mostly early ones, like LT-8003 (Walk Don't Run onward... I also have two original Ventures songbooks... #1 and #2... Can scan them also... Let me know if you're interested...
Best regards, [EDITOR'S NOTE: Thanks for the offer, Glenn. I'd certainly be interested in seeing the front and back covers of the Ventures reel tapes. I'll post a link when they're available on your web site.]
