Dan Gurney: All American Racer
Stock Car Races
Dan Gurney's stock car racing career was very limited, but boy was it successful! His first go at what were essentially stock cars was in a 1961 British saloon car race at Silverstone, where he took pole position in a Chevy Impala and was dominating when the engine let go. His entry in a race the next month in the same car was rejected by race organizers at Silverstone. In a 1963 race at Oulton Park, he again took pole and dominated, winning in a Ford Galaxie.
Dan's NASCAR career started with an entry in the 1962 Daytona 500, where he DNF'd with mechanical problems. The next month he entered a USAC stock car race at Riverside, but was disqualified (reasons unknown). In January 1963, Dan began a 6-year/5-race domination of the Riverside 500 race, with victories in a Ford at the 1963, 1964, 1965, 1966, and 1968 races. He DNF'd in a Mercury at the 1967 race, which was won by Parnelli Jones. Dan again DNF'd in a Mercury at the 1969 race, and took a 6th place finish in 1970 driving a Plymouth Superbird. He came out of retirement in 1980 to run the Riverside 500 one last time, but DNF'd in a Chevy.
Oh yes, Dan also placed a very respectable 5th in the 1963 Daytona 500 and 14th in the 1964 race.
During 1962 to 1980, Dan Gurney started 16 NASCAR stock car races, winning 5 times. He also started 2 British saloon car races, winning 1 time.
