Clarke's last collection of short stories before the beginning of the space age (Sputnik 1 was launched in October 1959) includes "Take a Deep Breath," which was used by Stanley Kubrick as the basis for one of the more dramatic scenes in "2001: A Space Odyssey." Published: "Lion" - 1949/"Fall" - 1948

Plot: In "The Lion of Comarre," a young man sets out in search of a mysterious city said to be hidden in the Arctic reaches. In "Against the Fall of Night," another young man challenges the accepted way of life that has existed within a walled city for millions of years and explores the wastelands outside the city walls.


The Sands of Mars

Plot: When a celebrated science fiction writer takes his first trip to Mars, he stumbles upon some of Mars's most carefully hidden secrets and unwittingly threatens the future of the planet.


Islands in the Sky

Plot: A young man makes his first trip into space and to the space stations that are like "Islands in the Sky."


Prelude to Space

Plot: Three brave men embark on mankind's first true spaceship in this prophet look at space travel before the beginning of the space age.


Childhood's End
Published: 1954

Plot: Earth is visited by a fleet of alien vessels that darken the skies with one goal in mind, but what is that goal?


Earthlight
Published: 1955

Plot: The discovery of heavy metals on the Moon leads to tension and the possible outbreak of armed conflict between Earth and its colonies.


The City and the Stars
Published: 1956

Plot: Eight years after the initial publication of "Against the Fall of Night," Clarke revisited that novel and completely rewrote his story of a young man who ventures outside a city that has isolated itself from the outside for millions of years. This is the revised and expanded version of that original novel.


The Deep Range
Published: 1957

Plot: In the near future, whales are raised in undersea ranches to feed mankind, but a life and death struggle lies in wait for one of the "whaleboys."


A Fall of Moondust
Published: 1961

Plot: A tourist spaceship crashes on the Moon, imprisoning 22 people under an avalanche of moondust, and the task of finding and rescuing them falls on the shoulders of one man.


Dolphin Island
Published: 1963

Plot: When a cargo hovership crashes into the Pacific, the sole survivor is saved by a school of dolphins who guide him to an island on Australia's Great Barrier Reef.


Glide Path
Published: 1963

Plot: In a departure from his usual science fiction fare, Clarke recounts the story of the invention and early tests of ground control radar during the World War II era.


2001: A Space Odyssey
Published: 1968

Plot: When a mysterious black monolith is found buried on the Moon, a group of astronauts embark on an incredible journey through space and time that leads them to one of Jupiter's moons.


Rendezvous with Rama
Published: 1973

Plot: An immense and mysterious spacecraft from deep space makes a close fly-by of Earth and a group of astronauts and scientists are sent to investigate whether the craft poses a threat to Earth.


Imperial Earth
Published: 1976

Plot: It is the 500th Anniversary of America's independence, and the leader of the human colony on Titan returns to the home of his forefathers to solve a mystery and to create a son -- a clone of himself.


The Fountains of Paradise
Published: 1978

Plot: On the top of a sacred mountain on Sri Lanka, scientists and engineers erect an incredible structure -- an elevator to space.


2010: Odyssey Two
Published: 1982

Plot: In this first sequel to "2001: A Space Odyssey," American and Russian astronauts set out to find out what happened to the Discovery probe of nine years earlier, and have an unexpected encounter with an alien intelligence on Jupiter's moon Europa.


The Songs of Distant Earth

Plot: As Earth approaches its final days before planetary extinction, a massive spacecraft departs, carrying with it the last remaining refugees of humankind to a new home many light years away.


2061: Odyssey Three

Plot: In this second sequel to "2001: A Space Odyssey," mankind is eagerly awaiting the return of Halley Comet and also enbarking on another expedition to Jupiter's moon Europa.

Plot: A seimologist who has developed a unique theory of earthquake prediction know that "The Big One" is coming, but in a future world run by Chinese corporations, there are many who don't want him to succeed in his attempts to prevent disaster.

Plot: In this third and final sequel to "2001: A Space Odyssey," one of the lost astronauts of the failed Discovery probe of 2001 is discovered in the frozen reaches of the galaxy and revived to set out on a final encounter with the mysterious black monolith and its intelligent masters.
