Introduction to the Star Trek Novels
Personal InsightsWhile the original Star Trek series was still in its first run on television, science fiction author James Blish began to adapt the episode scripts into a series of short stories, which were published in paperback collections by Bantam Books. Alan Dean Foster likewise adapted the animated episode scripts into a series of full-length novels, which were published by Ballantine Books. After a short run of original Star Trek novels, again published by Bantam Books, in 1979 Pocket Books acquired the exclusive right to publish Star Trek novels. Since that time, there has been an almost steady stream of new Star Trek paperback and hardcover novels. Although I don't know this for a fact, I suspect that this has been the longest running and most profitable (for Pocket Books and Paramount Pictures) line of books in history! As most fans will quickly agree, there have been some real losers among the Star Trek novels, but there have also been a fair share of excellent stories that expanded on the Star Trek universe seen on-screen.
