Deep Space Nine
Series Summary
After 50 years of occupation by the Cardassians, the planet Bajor is now free again. But, because of the social, cultural, economic, and environmental devastation the Cardassians caused, the Bajoran people are in need of assistance from the Federation to help them rebuild. When they withdrew, the Cardassians left behind a space station that they had used to mine the planet. At the request of the Bajoran Provisional Government, Starfleet takes over the administration of the station, which they call Deep Space Nine (the Cardassian name for the station was Terok Nor). However, when the Starfleet officers arrive on Deep Space Nine, they find that the Cardassians basically trashed the place before they left. All major systems have to be repaired or replaced. However, not all political factions on Bajor accept Starfleet's presence, causing political turmoil on the planet. Deep Space Nine is composed of a central Operations Center, a commercial area known as the Promenade, docking and service bays for visiting space vessels of all sizes, and a habitation ring. Although, at first the station was a virtual "ghost town" on the frontiers of explored space, the discovery of a stable wormhole close to Bajor has transformed Deep Space Nine into a hub for trade with the still mysterious Gamma Quadrant (a sector of the Galaxy that lies tens of thousands of light years away). But through the wormhole also comes trouble, in the form of the Dominion and its slave warriors, the Jem'Hadar, who pose one of the most dangerous threats ever faced by the races of the Alpha Quadrant.
