Apollo
Project Summary
The United States was stunned by the death of Apollo (AS-204) astronauts Virgil (Gus) Grissom, Edward White, and Roger Chaffee in a spacecraft fire during ground tests on January 27, 1967. However, the NASA teams recovered from this tragedy to mount a successful assault on the Moon that culminated with the first manned lunar landing of Apollo 11 on July 20, 1969. This fulfilled the goal set by President John F. Kennedy in 1961 of "landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth" by the end of the decade. Interrupted only by the near-fatal explosion aboard Apollo 13, five more Apollo lunar landers followed the "Eagle" to the lunar surface. Unfortunately, by the end of 1972, the American public and government had lost interest in the space program and three additional Apollo lunar landing missions were cancelled.
