Apollo-Soyuz
Project Summary
The Apollo-Soyuz Test Project (ASTP) was a reflection of the spirit of "detente" that existed between the United States and the Soviet Union during the 1970s. After several years of preparation, which included designing and building a docking module that would allow the docking of the Apollo command module and Soyuz spacecraft, Soyuz 19 lifted of from the Baikanour Cosmodrome on the morning of July 15, 1975. It was followed, later the same day, by the last Apollo spacecraft to be launched from the Kennedy Space Center. It was not until almost exactly 20 years later, in June 1995, that American and Russian spacecraft and astronauts would again meet in space, with the docking of the space shuttle Atlantis (STS-71) to the space station Mir.
