A Drive Around Guam, USA

Guide Map

Five times during the period of May 1997 to May 2001 (twice with my wife, Helena) I had the opportunity to visit Guam, one of the United States' tropical islands in the Pacific. Using photos I took during those trips, we'll go for a drive around this beautiful Pacific island. Guam is the westernmost territory of the United States and, therefore, it claims the distinction of being "Where America's Day Begins." The island is about 40 miles long and 12 miles wide, with an area of 212 square miles. That's twice the area of all of the U.S. Virgin Islands combined. Guam's indigenous people are called Chamorros, and they are descendents of the people who, most scientists believe, originally migrated from Malaysia thousands of years ago and the Spanish, who controlled Guam and the nearby Northern Mariana Islands for more than 300 years. Tourism is the main industry of Guam and its visitors are primarily from Japan, Korea, Taiwan, the Philippines, and other Asian-Pacific rim countries. Guam also has a large U.S. military presence in the form of Anderson Air Force Base and Naval Station Agana.

The map below will help you to get your bearings and follow along as we "drive" along in a big loop around the island. The yellow numbers on the map are keyed to the stops in our tour. We'll start in the heart of Hagatna (formerly Agana), the capital of Guam, and proceed counterclockwise. Incidentally, a real drive around the island with stops at the scenic sights you'll see on this tour takes about 5 to 6 hours. (I know because I've done it twice.) The menu below the map lets you jump to any particular stop. Or, you can just start at Stop 1 and follow the tour along to each successive page.
