A Drive Around Guam, USA
Stop 2 - War in the Pacific Park
Pacific Park (operated by the U.S. National Park Service) commemorates some of those events. The Park is actually composed of six different sites, two of which are located at Asan Bay. About two miles southeast of Hagatna is Asan Bay, the primary location where the 3rd Marine Division landed on July 21, 1944, to begin the American push to recapture Guam from Japan. In addition to the Liberators' Memorial seen in the photo above, the Asan Bay portion of the Park displays gun emplacements, caves, and pillboxes used by the Japanese to try to repel the invading Marines.
Here a memorial garden honors the Chamorros and Americans who died on Guam during World War II. In addition to the relief scuplture shown above, the memorial has a wall inscribed with the names of the honored dead.
The view from the Asan Bay Overlook is breathtaking and spans 180 degrees, from Apra Harbor on the left to the city of Hagatna on the right. Asan Bay itself is shown in the photo above.
As we continue our drive towards the south, a short distance from Asan Bay we see an elevated walkway extended several hundred feet out over the ocean to a structure that seems to be sitting in the middle of nowhere. This is the underwater observatory of the Fisheye Marine Park (similar to Coral World on St. Thomas). Visitors can descend into the structure to see the ocean life in its natural habitat. On land, the Fisheye Marine Park has sunset dinner shows featuring traditional Chamorro music and dance. Also like St. Thomas, Guam has an Atlantis submarine for underwater sightseeing further away from shore.
