A Drive Around Guam, USA

Stop 4 - Umatac Bay & Village

Umatac Bridge
Umatac Bridge towers

A short distance past the Cetti Bay Overlook we pass through the sleepy village of Umatac, with it's Spanish-influenced homes and central Catholic church. Just past the village, we cross Umatac Bridge and its attractive towers.

Fort Soledad
Fort Nuestra Senora de la Soledad

On a hill near the mouth of Umatac Bay stands the remains of Fort Nuestra Senora de la Soledad (Our Lady of Solitude). This fort was built by the Spanish during the 1800s as a lookout post for their galleons and attacking English pirates. Only the sentry box shown above remains of the original structure.

Umatac Bay
The mouth of Umatac Bay

It is believed that Umatac Bay is the place where Magellan first landed on Guam in 1521 during his around the world voyage. It would have been here that he first met the Chamorro people of Guam.
