A Drive Around Guam, USA

Stop 7 - Talofofo Bay & Falls

Talofofo Bay
Talofofo Bay's brown sand beach

Under the right conditions, Talofofo Bay, with it's unusual brown sand beach, is a popular spot for surfing. When I last visited Guam (in May 1997), Talofofo Bay was as seen in the photo above. However, about a week before Christmas 1997, an unusual but powerful winter typhoon -- Typhoon Paka -- struck Guam with devastating results. Although, by February 1999, there was hardly any evidence on Guam that Paka had visited, it was evident that Talofofo Bay was an unfortunate casualty of the typhoon. A lot of the sand had been washed away and the water was still brown from mud washed into the bay. I hope that on a future trip to Guam, I'll find that Talofofo Bay again looks like it does in the photo above.

Talofofo Falls

Inland from Talofofo Bay is a 30-foot waterfall that bears the same name. Created by the Ugum River, Talofofo Falls is a favorite picnicking and swimming spot for local residents. The falls can be reached by hiking trail or, for the less adventurous, by car.
