A Drive Around Guam, USA

Stop 9 - Anderson Air Force Base

Anderson AFB
At Anderson Air Force Base

As we leave Pago Bay, still heading north along Guam's eastern coast, we head into a stretch of road that is relatively deserted (with a few homes and businesses along the way) and little of real "sighthseeing" interest because it's a bit inland from the seashore. Eventually, however, we arrive at the gated entrance to Anderson Air Force Base, home of the 13th Air Force.

B-52

During the Vietnam War, Anderson AFB was teeming with activity as B-52 bombers rotated in and out carrying their deadly bomb loads to that Southeast Asian country. Today, Anderson is primarily a refueling stop for American military aircraft traveling between the United States and Asia. As recently as early February 1999, B-2 stealth bombers were seen departing Anderson AFB enroute either to or from the United States.

Tarague Bay

Tarague Bay actually lies within the boundaries of Anderson Air Force Base and, as a result, is very popular with the military personnel stationed there and their families. The beach is one of the prettiest on Guam because of the sparkling white sand and thick grove of coconut palms that line the beach.
