Oahu's northwestern coast is world renowned for its great surfing. During the winter months, waves that begin near Alaska roll southward and crash along the beaches here. One of the most famous of these northshore surfing beaches is Sunset Beach

Waimea Bay, which lies 2 miles west of Sunset Beach, is another well-known Oahu surfing beach. Waimea has two distinct personalities -- in the summer, the water is as calm as a pond (as shown in the first photo above), but during the winter, its reefs can generate awesome waves of up to 30 feet.
