A Drive Around Oahu, Hawaii
Stop 9 - Pineapple Plantations
The southwestern or leeward portion of Oahu, with its Waianae Mountain range, isn't as developed as the section covered by our tour (although several secluded beaches are used by tour companies that put on traditional Hawaiian luaus there). So, about half way down the island's northwest coast, our tour driver turns inland for the return trip to our Waikiki hotel. On the way, we pass by miles and miles of fields planted with what is probably Hawaii's most famous crop -- pineapples. Sugar cane used to be an important crop in years gone by, but it's no longer economically feasible to grow for export. Pineapples and macadamia nuts, however, are still important exports from Hawaii.
Each pineapple plant produces one pineapple at a time, and the spiny "head" of the pineapple fruit can be planted to produce a new plant.
