A Drive Around St. John
Stop 1 - Cruz Bay, St. John
We arrive at Cruz Bay, St. John after a 20 minute ferry boat ride from St. Thomas. The white building with a red roof that sits on the hill just behind the ferry boats in the photo above houses the offices of the Governor's representative on St. John. If you look over the side of our ferry, you'll notice that even with all of the boat traffic at Cruz Bay, the water is crystal clear, and the many private boats and yachts seem to just glide in mid-air a few feet over the ocean floor.
As we step off the ferry, immediately in front of us is a small park with a gazebo bandstand used for community events. To the right, along the water's edge, is a cluster of colorful buildings, which house the Wharfside Village Shops. In the distance to the right is a small peninsula of land with a cluster of earth-tone buildings. These are the cottages of the Gallows Point Suite Resort, one of several fine hotels and guest houses on the island.
A 5 minute walk to the left of the ferry dock, past many small gift shops and eateries, is Mongoose Junction, the largest shopping complex on St. John. The attractive stone-faced buildings with their lush landscaping house a variety of shops and eateries. But, for now, we'll arrange for an island tour with one of the many taxi drivers who will be at the Cruz Bay dock to meet each arriving ferry boat. On our tour, we'll first head towards the southern coast of St. John.
