A Drive Around St. John

Stop 2 - South Coast Sights

A short drive out of the town of Cruz Bay we'll come to Great Cruz Bay, a beautiful sheltered bay where St. John's premiere resort hotel is located. The Westin St. John Resort was opened in 1998 after major repairs and renovations were made to the hotel complex as a result of damage suffered from Hurricane Marilyn in 1995. As you can see in the photos below, the resort's cottages are right at the water's edge, where guests can easily enjoy a variety of watersports.

We won't go too much further along St. John's southern coast because this is rugged terrain with only secondary roads. But some of the sights available in this area for the more intrepid visitor include Reef Bay, where prehistoric stone carvings (called "petroglyphs") have been preserved, and Lameshur Bay, where during the 1960s the U.S. Navy had an experimental underwater habitat called "Tektite." Scientists lived aboard Tektite for months at a time conducting research in the deep waters lying off the coastline.

After leaving the Westin, we continue heading East for a short distance then turn inland to connect with Centerline Road, a snaking mountain road that provides breath-taking views of the valleys where sugar cane plantations were common during the 17th and 18th Centuries; Bordeaux Mountain, at 1,300 feet the tallest on St. John; and Coral Bay, our next stop.
