A Drive Around St. Thomas
Stop 4 - The Frenchman's Reef and Morningstar Beach Resorts
The Marriott Frenchman's Reef Resort has been, for the past 25 years, one of the premiere hotels on St. Thomas. Sitting on a finger of land at the entrance to the harbor of Charlotte Amalie, it commands a great view back towards town and also afford guests a closeup look at the many cruise ships and smaller vessels that enter and leave the harbor each day. It has a variety of restaurants, night clubs, tennis and water sports activities, and convention facilities. The "Reef," as it's affectionately called by the island residents, has a special significance for my wife and I because that's where our wedding reception was held in 1974. By the way, the bright red flowers in the picture above are called Bouganvilla.
The Reef suffered major damage by Hurricane Marylin, which hit St. Thomas in September 1995. However, it continued to operate in the immediate aftermath of the hurricane and served as the command post for FEMA and other disaster assistance agencies. In December 1997, the Reef reopened after a 6-month, $45-million renovation project that saw the exterior architecture converted to a more traditional Caribbean style, the public areas opened up to provide an airier feel, and all of the hotel's rooms completely refurbished and outfitted.
Finally, the Reef's companion resort at Morningstar Beach (a short walk from the main hotel complex) is located right on what is perhaps the most spectacular beach on St. Thomas's southern shore. The Morningstar Beach Resort features seaside rooms and dining.
