A Drive Around St. Thomas
Stop 5 - Red Hook and Sapphire Bay
As you might expect, sailing is a popular pastime among residents and visitors alike. The Rolex Regatta, held around Easter time each year, draws sailors from around the world for a series of grueling races around the St. Thomas. In 1998, a group of ambitious yachtsmen and businessmen were preparing for the Virgin Islands America's Cup Challenge to try to bring the prestigious trophy to the Virgin Islands.
Located on St. Thomas's easternmost tip, Red Hook is the main place to catch a ferry boat for the 15-minute ride to St. John. In recent years, its even been possible for residents to take their cars with then to St. John, which certainly is an added convenience. Also at Red Hook, there's a thriving business community, including many shops and fine restaurants, located in the American Yacht Harbor and other nearby shopping complexes.
As we leave Red Hook and continue on our "drive" around St. Thomas, we soon arrive at the Sapphire Bay Resort, which is only one of about a half-dozen elegant resorts located along the northeastern coast of St. Thomas. From a hill overlooking Sapphire Bay, we can see a panorama of islands than make up the majority of the U.S. and British Virgin Islands.
