A Drive Around St. Thomas

Stop 8 - Cyril E. King Airport and the U.V.I. Campus

Cyril King Airport
St. Thomas' Cyril E. King Airport

In 1927, sometime after his history-making flight across the Atlantic, Charles Lindbergh paid a visit to St. Thomas, landing his "Spirit of St. Louis" in a swampy area on the island's southwestern coast. The nearby beach was later named Lindbergh Bay in his honor. During World War II, the swampy area was converted into a military airbase. Today, it is the Cyril E. King Airport, one of the most important lifelines between St. Thomas and the rest of the world.

Looking west from the same location where the above photo was taken, we see part of the rugged southwestern coast of St. Thomas. This particular area is called Black Point.

Brewer's Bay
The U.V.I. faculty residences overlook Brewer's Bay

Several buildings of the University of the Virgin Islands sit atop a hill adjacent to Brewer's Bay, which another popular weekend spot for island residents. The larger building at the top houses the cafeteria, bookstore, and some administrative offices. The smaller buildings on the side of the hill are faculty residences.

UVI Campus
The main University of the Virgin Islands campus

A little further inland, the main campus of the University sits atop another hill. The library and main classrooms buildings are at the top, with student dorms lining the side of the hill. In the foreground is part of a 9-hole golf course that doubles as a popular spot for family picnics when there aren't any golfers around.
