A Drive Around St. Thomas
Stop 9 - Overview of Charlotte Amalie from Skyline Drive
We're now back almost to our starting point. From Skyline Drive (officially Valdimar Hill Drive) located on the ridge of mountains that runs the length of St. Thomas, we have a perfect vantage point to look down on the city limits of Charlotte Amalie and the harbor. In this first view, we see the cluster of red-roofed buildings (on the hill in the center) that makes up the Bluebeard's Castle Hotel. Behind that is the Havensight area with the cruise ship docks filled to capacity, and still further in the distance, is the large white structure that is the Frenchman's Reef Resort.
In this second view, we see the heart of the downtown area. The red-roofed Emancipation Garden Post Office lies almost exactly in the center of the picture. The small island at the upper right is Hassel Island, a largely uninhabited island.
Looking further to the west, in this third photo we see Hassel Island (left) and Water Island (right). Water Island, which is the fourth largest Virgin Islands, was recently transferred from U.S. Government to local government ownership. About a hundred families make Water Island their home. The bay to the right of Water Island is called Sub Base, in recognition of it's use during World War II as a major U.S. submarine base. Most of the developed area seen in this picture is residential. Well, that's the end of our "drive" around my home island of St. Thomas. I hope you enjoyed it and learned a little about the island and the attractions it has to offer. I also hope you have a chance to visit in person someday.
